In the early days of consumer VR, circa 2014, during the release of the Oculus Developer Kit 1, Stephan Tanguay conducted groundbreaking research that pushed the boundaries of VR interaction at a time when position tracking and dedicated controllers were still in development.  Using the Razer Hydra as motion-tracked controllers, Stephan integrated them to create an innovative VR control scheme that closely resembles modern VR FPS controls—years ahead of their time.

This work enabled fluid hand and body movement tracking, resulting in a control mechanism particularly well-suited for cover-based shooters.  At a time when VR technology offered only limited degrees of freedom (3DOF), Stephan’s forward-thinking approach anticipated many of the control systems that have since become standard in VR gaming.
